Project Butter Lamp

Tibetan children face political and economic
displacement
In many areas of Tibet, there are still
Tibetans following a traditional nomadic lifestyle. This
traditional way of life is under attack on many fronts,
political, economic and cultural. Tibetan youth are sent
into government schools where they are treated as second
class citizens and forced to give up their language and
culture. Nomads in remote areas are plagued by unemployment,
poverty, lack of high quality education and poor healthcare.
When the nomad youth leave their traditional lifestyle and
are seduced into the larger cities, they encounter
discrimination, disease, and lack of opportunity.
In some areas, monasteries were allowed to
take in nomadic children, however there have recently been
placed limits on the number of monks allowed. The
response to this problem is the creation of schools where
the nomad children are housed on the school grounds, and
taught in their own language with their cultural background
respected and cherished. Project Butter Lamp was created as
a way to support these types of schools, which provide
high-quality education and housing to these students in
these very remote and impoverished regions. Project
Butter Lamp is currently up and running both in Tibet and
Nepal. The Project works to provide shelter and schooling to
these nomadic Tibetan children and youth.
There are currently 2 schools, with a third
boarding school in Eastern Tibet near Kham. One school has
about 55 children and is well staffed with teachers. The
other school has approximately 80 students. The third
boarding school has room for 120 students but there is
currently only enough funding for 31 students.
Crystal
Tones supports Project Butter Lamp and has committed to
providing ongoing financial support as a helping hand to
bring more children into the boarding schools. We have
pledged to offer a minimum of $333 a month to help with the
room, board and education of Tibetan nomad children in their
native homeland. You can help too! You can match our funds,
and for every donation we receive, we'll match your dollars
all the way up to a maximum of $1080 per month! Imagine what
this could do to improve the lives of these children. It
only takes $15 to sponsor one child for a month. Just $100
can pay the month's expenses for a caring, highly educated
teacher. $5 or $10 can help pay for school supplies, food or
cooking fuel. All donations are tax-deductible!
